Extend your existing skills into real-time production
Developed with and supported by A Productions, this four-week Skills Bootcamp is designed for professionals with existing experience in animation, 3D, VFX or related creative disciplines who want to develop their ability to work with Unreal Engine in a production context.
You will work from initial scene development through to a completed cinematic sequence, exploring cinematography, animation editing in Sequencer, advanced lighting, Niagara visual effects, look development, post-processing and professional rendering.
Rather than introducing creative production from the beginning, the programme will help you apply your existing creative and technical knowledge within a real-time workflow.
You will gain structured, hands-on experience of bringing animation, lighting and effects together in Unreal Engine and responding to evolving industry requirements.
Who is this Bootcamp for?
The programme has been created for people who already have practical or professional experience in areas such as Animation, 3D modelling or visualisation, VFX, Lighting, Character animation, Games art or development, Motion design, Virtual production, Film, television or related creative production
It is suitable for:
-
Freelancers and self-employed creative professionals who want to broaden the services they can offer
-
Employees of small and medium-sized studios who want to introduce or expand real-time production capability
-
Experienced practitioners moving into a role that requires Unreal Engine
-
Professionals who understand established creative workflows but need structured experience of applying them in Unreal Engine
This is an intensive professional development programme and is not intended as an entry-level introduction to animation or 3D production.
You do not need to be an advanced Unreal Engine user, but you should have relevant creative or technical experience and be comfortable learning within a fast-paced, production-focused environment.
What will you learn?
By the end of the proposed Bootcamp, you will have developed your ability to:
-
Apply cinematography and scene-blocking principles within Unreal Engine
-
Integrate and edit character animation using Sequencer
-
Transfer established production practices into a real-time Unreal Engine workflow
-
Develop cinematic lighting using physically based materials, global illumination, reflections and volumetric effects
-
Create environmental, character and multi-emitter effects using Niagara
-
Evaluate the creative and performance implications of different real-time effects methods
-
Establish a coherent visual style through look development and post-processing
-
Combine animation, lighting, VFX and editorial within master and sub-sequences
-
Produce multi-pass renders using Movie Render Queue and professional delivery formats
Curriculum and delivery
The proposed curriculum overview below is structured around the journey from an initial idea to a completed cinematic sequence.
The Bootcamp will be delivered online, enabling professionals and freelancers to take part alongside their existing work and other commitments.
Learning will take place through scheduled live online sessions rather than self-directed study. These sessions will include practical teaching, demonstrations, guided activities and opportunities to receive feedback.
-
Week one: From idea to shot
Establish your Unreal Engine production workflow and translate your existing cinematography, animation and production knowledge into a real-time environment.
You will create and block a short cinematic scene, explore contrasting camera and movement approaches, work with animated characters in Sequencer, and examine how established project-management and version-control practices are applied within Unreal Engine production. -
Week two: Creating the look
Develop the visual mood of your sequence through materials, lighting and cinematic composition.
You will create interior, environment and nighttime lighting while exploring physically based rendering, global illumination, reflections, volumetric effects and colour temperature. -
Week three: Adding effects
Use Niagara to introduce real-time visual effects into your scene.
Beginning with particles, emitters and forces, you will progress to character effects, multi-emitter systems, real-time fluids and more advanced explosion effects. -
Week four: From Unreal Engine scene to film
Bring your animation, lighting and visual effects together to produce a finished cinematic shot.
You will explore look development and post-processing before assembling your sequence and creating professional multi-pass renders using Movie Render Queue.
